Hemodialysis Technician Course
​

Hemodialysis Patient Care Technicians operate and manage patients and the dialysis machines that remove waste and excess fluids from the blood of patients whose kidneys can no longer carry out those functions. The job field for dialysis technicians may be labeled: Hemodialysis Technicians, Renal Dialysis Technicians, and Nephrology Technicians.

  • Organs and Function of the Renal System

  • Components of the Delivery System

  • Medical Terminology

  • Renal Failure/ESRD

  • Water Treatments

  • Blood Draw Procedure

  • Infection Control and

  • Standard Precautions

  • Procedural Clinical Proficiency

Externship Program
 

The externship serves as working experience, as well as a reference for future employment. For an additional fee of $550, students receive hands-on-training by completing a 100 clock-hour externship at a local dialysis clinic through MK Education.

​

MK Education has established relationships with dialysis clinics nationwide to provide potential opportunities to complete this externship for all students.

National Certification Exams

 

After course completion, students are prepared for three national certification exams:​​

  • Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician Exam (CHT) offered by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT)

  • Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) offered by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC)

  • Clinical Nephrology Technology (CNT) offered by the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO).

Hemodialysis Career Outlook

The shortage of qualified personnel in technology-related healthcare fields provides opportunities for our graduates to excel in some of the most in-demand specialties. Employment of dialysis technicians is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Because of the growing elderly population, many nursing assistants and orderlies will be needed to assist and care for these patients.  (www.bls.gov)

Prerequisites
 

  • 18 years of age

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Proficient in the English language

  • 9th grade Algebra & Arithmetic

  • Hand-to-eye coordination and finger agility

  • Suitable vision, normal or corrected

  • Immunizations & background check
    (May be required by clinical observation sites and employers)

  • No prior criminal offenses
