Medical Coding Course
​
​As part of the Medical Coding program, you'll learn the importance and fundamentals of proper coding to execute financial goals of major medical practices. You will also be introduced to the profession of medical coding in the physician and hospital environment. This skill set helps better prepare students for a variety of jobs in the field, offering graduates a competitive advantage.

Areas of Study Include:

Health care delivery system and health occupations

Anatomy and physiology of the human body

Application of medical terminology

Disease processes in relationship to the human body, including pharmacology

ICD and CPT coding systems, both manual and automated

Medical coding referencing

Basics of health information services

Ethical and legal principles with regard to medical records

Computer skills

Safety and security of health information
Prerequisites
-
18 years of age
-
High school diploma or G.E.D.
-
Proficient in the English language

9th grade Algebra & Arithmetic
National Certification Exams
After course completion, students are prepared for three national certification exams:​

Certified Coding Association (CCA) by AHIMA
-
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by AAPC
-
Billing and Coding Specialist Certification (CBCS) by NHA
​
According to AHIMA, the CCA designation has been the national standard of achievement in health information management since 2002.
Medical Coding Career Outlook
Employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages.
