Phlebotomy technicians, or phlebotomists, are skilled healthcare professionals who collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens.  Collection techniques include venipuncture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venipuncture) or micro-collection.  They are responsible for identifying and selecting equipment, supplies and other additives used in blood collection.  Another important function is the understand factors that affect specimen collection procedures and test results.

 

Phlebotomy technicians can work in a whole array of locations, including but not limited to:

 

  • Hospitals

  • Clinics/Public Health

  • Laboratories

  • Outpatient labs

  • Physician offices

  • Blood donor centers

  • Research institutions

  • Hospices

  • Mobile hospitals

  • Emergency care
