With finals just around the corner, now is the perfect time to check up on these quick tips on how to improve your studying skills!

9. CHANGE OF SPACE. A study in the New York Times suggests alternating your space of study is more effective when trying to retain information. Although the library is usually the go-to location for studying, changing spaces has been proven to increase the likelihood of improving your memory and remembering what you need to!

8. 2 MINDS ARE BETTER THAN 1. Divide and conquer your workload be creating study guides and to be shared among your peers! It is a smart way to lessen your workload but still study all necessary material. Never underestimate the power in numbers, especially when working out a complicated problem or assignment. You might even make a friend!

7. FLASH 'EM. Sometimes you have to go back to the basics; that’s why they say “old is gold.” Writing down and going over notes and definitions on flashcards multiple times help imprint information in your memory. Be creative and add mnemonic devices to your flashcards to help you study.

6. TEST IT OUT. You may hate exams, but according to a study done by the American Medical Association (AMA), pre-testing yourself will not only affirm what you have studied, it will enhance it. Consistent evaluations can help us recall and sometimes relearn information. You may hate an extra exam - but it will pay off when you get that A+!

5. YOU SNOOZE, YOU WIN. A tired mind is a slow mind. Get enough sleep and watch your energy level and grades increase rapidly.

4. DON'T CATEGORIZE YOURSELF. Students tend to categorize themselves as a visual learner or someone who learns through listening and understanding, or by being left-brained or right-brained thinkers. Modernmedicine.com reports research which supports that these assumptions will only limit your learning abilities. Experiment with different methods of studying and use whichever method that work for you for a certain class or exam, instead of worrying about where you fall in the learning spectrum.

3. GO TO CLASS! Sounds obvious, but you have no idea how many people think doing everything except going to class regularly will give them the passing grade and knowledge they need to succeed. When your teachers say “optional”, they don’t mean it. The best way to succeed in a class is to do the following: pre-read material before class, attend regularly, and follow the problem-based learning method by participating in group discussions. By doing this, you will have already begun the process of reviewing as well as knowing what to look forward to come exam day. Completing the readings and assignments beforehand will better prepare you to retain the concepts of the program and gives you the opportunity to ask questions on what you don’t understand instead of relying on learning the material in a boring classroom setting while the instructor regurgitates the information from the text.

2. EXPLORE MORE. According to Modernmedicine.com, immersing yourself in the subject material is not always the most effective way to study. You should switch between a few related topics rather than just sticking to one subject and spending hours trying to master it. It makes studying less boring, and you will be able to cover more.

1. PROCRASTINATION NATION. What’s worse than having a deadline you ask? Missing the deadline. Stay organized, don’t procrastinate and your workload will be more manageable. This way, trying to cram a bunch of information in your brain right before the exam will be a choice and not the only option.

GOOD LUCK (but you won’t need it with these tips!)
