Kidney function is essential to life. A functioning kidney is able to maintain the body’s normal levels of salt, water and waste in order to control blood pressure and regulate important chemicals in the bloodstream. Renal failure is when the kidney is unable to perform its proper functions, and the result is a buildup of water, fluid and waste in the blood.
This is when dialysis technicians play a vital, life-saving role! Through the operation of a dialysis machine, technicians are able to remove the harmful buildup and purify the blood. Basically, the dialysis technician is responsible for taking over the role of the kidneys!
It is incredibly important for the dialysis technician to fully understand how the machine works, and how it influences the human body. They are also responsible for measuring and recording patient information and vitals before, during and after dialysis. Dialysis technicians can specialize in renal, acute or hemodialysis.
In order to get a job in this field, each state requires certification and licensing as well as continuing education. Each state also has particular training programs in order to become a Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT). MK Education holds one of the very few BONENT (Board of Nephrology Examination for Nurses and Technicians) approved dialysis technician program in Illinois. Along with BONENT, the MK course prepares students for two more national certification exams held by the NNCC (Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission) and the NNCO (National Nephrology Certification Organization).

The MK Course is currently being offered this summer at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. A 350 hour classroom experience will train students in renal system organ function, renal failure, uremia, psychosocial aspects, infection control and standard precautions, procedural clinical proficiency, and much more.
